Star Durable Pads was launched in April 2017 as a social enterprise project in response to an urgent need for menstrual products for girls and women here in Uganda. Many girls and women lack access or are unable to afford menstrual products, and are left with no option but to leave school or work. Many have to resort to using unhygienic or uncomfortable items like rags to manage their menstruation.

We aim to break down this barrier to women’s prosperity, education and empowerment with our reusable and affordable pads. Only when girls are enabled to fulfil their potential will the future success of families, communities and the country be secured.

Star Durable Pads are manufactured locally in Jinja, supporting seamstresses from the communities where we work. Profits go towards funding more Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights trainings in schools and communities, ensuring more people are educated about their health and rights, and as many women and girls as possible have the tools to manage their menstruation safely and hygienically.

In Uganda, menstrual products such as single-use pads and tampons are unaffordable for many families. Also, some families consider that when a girl starts menstruating she is ready for marriage, meaning she is forced to leave school to get married and start a family. Sadly, this leads some girls to hide their periods out of fear and shame.

  • Eco-friendly – being reusable, they drastically cut the amount of waste being generated
  • Comfortable – the soft materials avoid heat irritation caused by some single-use menstrual products
  • Affordable – investing in a set of Star Durable Pads is much cheaper in the long run than having to buy single-use times for every period
  • Sustainable – they can be used for 6-8 months
  • Easy to use – simple clean in cold water for 15 minutes, using plain un-perfumed soap and let them dry fully before using again!

When girls and women can’t access menstrual products, they have to resort to unhygienic and uncomfortable alternatives like old clothes, rags, toilet paper and banana leaves. Consequently, lots of girls don’t attend school (or drop out all together) when they start menstruating, because they don’t have products and/or don’t have anywhere safe, private and clean at their school to change a pad or tampon.

Furthermore, there’s no proper waste management system in Uganda, so people have to bury or burn their rubbish themselves. Single-use pads and tampons create a huge amount of waste and make a large negative impact on the environment.
