The Nyonga Women’s Shelter is part of our Human Rights programme, and is Uganda’s largest shelter for female survivors of GBV and the only one in eastern Uganda serving women fleeing violence. Here is WORI’s Executive Director, Rose Kigere, explaining the vital work the Nyonga Women’s Shelter is now able to achieve:

WORI has extensive experience working with women who have been abused. Our community awareness sessions on GBV and domestic abuse have always been and continue to be one of WORI’s most important projects. We also hold action groups where victims of violence can share their experiences and support each other in healing and rebuilding their lives.

Our biggest undertaking in our GBV prevention work is the Nyonga Women’s Shelter. The project was conceived in 2014, and in 2017 construction was completed on the main building. In 2018, we opened the shelter for day services, such as counselling, emergency medical care and legal aid and in early 2020 we were finally able to open our doors to the first residents of the Nyonga Women’s Shelter.
